LONGLEAT URN

Large William Kent urn of fine design and quality, circa 1735. Probably one of the finest urns ever designed by this celebrated architect and designer.  Undoubtedly used in Alexander Pope's garden at Twickenham.  The variation in some of the carved detail is almost certain to be the stone mason's interpretation.  Ideal for vistas or avenues. Four of the original six urns are now in the formal gardens of Longleat House.  Usually with the Longleat Pedestal (C7500B).

POPE'S URN

This urn has been copied from the origional designed by William Kent for Alexander Pope's garden at Twickenham. The design is shown in Vardy's 'Some Designs of Mr. Indigo Jones and Mr. William Kent', 1744. A copy of this book is in the Royal collection housed at the British Museum.  Pope's garden overlooking the Thames was laid out and developed by him over a period of 25 years. It became one of the most original contributions to garden design ever made in this country.  Throughout the garden at strategic points, he placed various statues and urns; six of the stone urns and pedestals were a present from the Prince of Whales.  Pope admitted that he neglected writing for gardening, and he claimed that he preferred his fame as a gardener.
